I don't follow your logic.  They couldn't hear the difference, but your
faith tells you there must be one, and therefore blind tests don't work?
Wouldn't it be simpler to posit that there isn't a difference?

As for MP3, don't forget it was designed to remove the information
which is least perceptible to people.  On the other hand speakers and
rooms distort in a way that is obvious and immediately audible.     
Anyway, I rip everything to FLAC because it's hardly any more trouble
and might make a difference, so this isn't a particularly germane issue
at least for me.
