Do you really think a Strad sounds like any run of the mill violin? I bet if someone ran a test with a set (any set) of Gretch drums and a set of Ludwig Vistalite drums and had the same results you'd be telling me they sound the same as well. I can't tell you, having heard the former on many occasions and owned the latter (horrible, boomy sounding things really), they sound nothing alike. My point is, you could run any number of blind tests where people could not tell the difference. That doesn't mean there isn't one. I'm sure you could tape the sound of a Corvette and a Ferrari each reving their engines, play snippets of them back and a group of people could not correctly identify the differences over a series of tests. Proves only that those people didn't know what to listen for or that they are half deaf OR that blind testing isn't particularly usefull. I had a guy in my place listening to a pair of speakers I was trying to sell him. I was using my Squeezebox as a source, playing FLAC files of particularly good recordings (I was trying to demonstrate the speakers at their best after all) and guess what? The guy wanted to know what radio stations I was streaming. I can assure you, my digital audio setup, streaming lossless audio, does NOT sound like internet radio. He bought the speakers, he thought the sound was amazing. So, does internet radio and lossless audio sound the same on my rather expensive system or is the listener at fault? It doesn't matter that I did not A/B both for him. I can tell a compresssed stream from a mile away. I would never be "fooled" into confusing a lossless stream to a highly compressed one. So, I'm not interested in the results of some blind test. And I'm not interested in hearing how only the "least perceptible" stuff has been ripped out. If I didn't care about the minutiae and nuances I wouldn't have spent the kind of cash I have to build a audio system. No, I'm not a detail freak, I don't like my systems analytical, but I do want them to be at least somewhat revealing and not gloss over the details completely.
