Very nice post Hirsch!
I have been speculating about the possibility that "critical" or
concentrated listening modifies the way we hear things, and make many
qualitative judgements harder to make than if we listen more relaxed
over longer time periods.

The brain is amazingly good at filling in missing pieces and ironing
out things to enable us to decode what we here despite distortions and
environmental influences. The strain of doing a lot of this work
probably only starts to affect us after some time.
