I still don't understand the original question.  If the issue is
automating the ripping process to the maximum extent, the quality of
the hardware isn't much of an issue.  EAC will squeeze blood from a
stone.

If you want to rip as many discs as you can as fast as you can, use two
or three PCs set up with two CDROM drives each.  You'll have trouble
keeping up with the freedb data corrections.

If you want to make the ripping, tagging, etc. process as automatic as
possible, use EAC to rip a hundred or so CDs, then convert to .flac and
tag them using flac which works in batch mode.  I have a detailed
