HDCD is very much alive, especially in receivers and dvd players. There is a plethora of media, it's cheap and more importantly drm free, and possibly near the theoretical limit of playback resolution*. Search for it at MS, if nothing else it will show interest, but also lead you to the link I posted earlier; $10k for source code, $.20c/unit royalty. They'd probably even help/show you how to program it into a DSP processor like blackfin (which roku used/s**)- along with all the other formats you choose.
