My music library is 1127 albums, there are two clients (a Transporter and a Sqeezebox2), and Slimserver consumes about 95MB. The response via the remote at the Transporter and Squeezebox is fine. The web interface is admittedly a tad sluggish, but I only ever use that for administrative purposes. This machine also runs the household email system (not Exchange!), an Oracle database, and a Xitami web server. So I'd say that a 1.6GHz/512MB machine is more than enough for a 550 album library.
