Well the microphone would be what you use for power amps via speakers -
presumably you would use oscilloscopes for CD players etc.  The point is
that you have some kind of receiving device to measure the difference,
and this may differ in its sensitivity to what matters, i.e. ears.

Has anyone found two products that are completely identical via a
difference test?  I would have thought that even manufacturing
tolerance should be measurable - very few companies get paired speakers
to within 0.5dB, for example.
