No longer at a loss; I hope this will help someone.

Tech support had me uninstall 6.5.1 and re-install 6.3.  Problem fixed.
Then, we installed 6.5.1 (not the nightly, but the regular release) and
everything is back to normal.

It seems that this is related to a known bug with translating Apple
Lossless files in the current version.
