I do this too.  Most of my CDs are in excellent condition anyways, and
I do find iTunes on my Mac to be very simple.

One question for those of you using Apple Lossless; in the File Types
section of SlimServer, do you use Apple Lossless->FLAC?  Or do you use
Apple Lossless->WAV?  If you've compared the two, any perceived
differences?
