I'm not sure that obsolete is the right term, it's still in the spec, and a lot CD players out there implement it. On the other hand, it is very seldom used.
The larger problem is that none of the computer music formats, like wav, support it. So once you've ripped it to a computer file, you've lost the pre-emphasis control bit. I'm afraid Sean's correct, your best bet is to find a ripper than can perform the de-emphasis during the rip.
