I think this is a good question, and I think the answer is that the
same bit stream goes out to an external DAC that is passed onto the
internal DAC - 48KHz/24bit.
I assume the decimation is being done in a cpu/Xilinx chip, and there
does not exist the possibility of having a separate output that is not
decimated for an external DAC?
I assume the onboard Xilinx chip does not have the space or speed to
implement a 300 tap 24 KHz FIR filter? Probably not.
So, the only solution would be to implement this filter somehow into
Slimserver. I suppose we could implement such a thing and insert it
into the flac decoding instruction in convert.conf?
Something like:
flc flc transcode *
[flac] -dcs --skip=$START$ --until=$END$ -- $FILE$ |
lowPassFilterGoesHere | [flac] -cs --totally-silent
--compression-level-0 -
and then we let the SB3 go ahead and decimate as usual, and the noise
floor will not increase due to aliased information above 24 KHz.
What say?
