Truth be told I don't think it is that hard at all. Long before I'd
heard of the Squeezebox I was ripping my CDs to WAV using Wavelab and
creating my own CD based compilations. I later started keeping the
ripped audio on my PC and then discovered FLAC (mp3 was never an option
for anything but my iPod). It was through this process that I started
searching for a digital library with means of playing the audio without
having to go through the PC sound card. A little Googling, some reading
of these forums and my mind was made up. I've never looked back.

All you need to have digital music is some basic knowledge/
understanding and some freeware tools: eac/ grip, FLAC, mp3tag &
slimserver. Now if only mp3tag had a native Linux version I could shut
down my win pc forever.
