Hi Jaco,
There are FIFO type solutions which don't rely on a master clock type
system, and these were what I was refering to. You're right though,
this is the first I've seen that add's an external clock input to the
SB3, which would allow a much smaller (and cheaper) FIFO buffer.

The counter point, is that by it's nature, the SB3 is already a FIFO
type system. As such to improve it's clocking ability, you need only
improve it's internal clock. No need for an external FIFO buffer.

The preferred use of an I2S interface is understandable as well. I
have long wished this was a more widely adopted interface. Even better
is the even rarer I2Se interface used in some Wadia and Sonic Frontiers
gear. Rather than adding an external clock input to the SB3, how about
adding an I2S output? Keep the clock and data separate and don't bother
with an outboard FIFO buffer.

But still, the best question is the one I haven't a good answer for. A
lot of sonic problems are blamed on Jitter, and I have no doubt that
gross amounts are audible, but I really don't have a handle on where
the limits of audibility are....

Cheers, DC
