Yeah .. I thought it was well written too. Originally I wasn't going to
post this, because the matter has been discussed here a couple of times
before, and there are a bunch of similar articles floating about on the
internet including a wikipedia entry (just ask the great Google oracle -
and all will be revealed) But when I saw Slim Devices mentioned, and
Sean's Quote - I just had to.

I should hope not! I would imagine that the original master tapes are
treated more carefully, and all this craziness only happens in the
final mix before the pressing in a medium specific manner i.e. a
different final mastering for CD and Vinyl.

I wonder how hard it would be to dynamically implement all these
loudness and compression operations on the tracks (i.e. if they must be
done at all) depending upon the intended listening scenario. Perhaps
something like Replay Gain tags (or other meta tags) in the tracks
would tell an iPod to compress it differently, a car stereo
differently, a radio station differently, and a high end stereo to not
compress it at all.

Taking this same train of thought slightly off track - in my ideal
world this approach could go several steps ahead. Wouldn't it be great
if music became available in some sort of unmixed multitrack format -
with a couple of guide mixes so that we could hear it as the artists
and producers intended, but also with the option to add and remove
instruments, and generally fool around. It would change the way
listeners interact with music completely, making them far more involved
artistically and creatively ... if wishes were horse ... and pigs could
fly :)
