Because:
a) I know how enough about how digital audio works and (as others have
stated) the level coming out of the DAC has nothing - NOTHING - to do
with the analogue levels of the "digital" signal present on the inbound
SPDIF stream. If it did, you could strap a pot across the SPDIF and use
it as a volume control...

b) some people always want to look for the most complex explanation to
any phenomena - even when the obvious answer is staring them in the
face. 

c) the attenuator is not in the digital chain - what are you rambling
about?

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...

...SB3+TACT+Altmann+MF DACXV3/Linn tri-amped Aktiv 5.1 system and some
