John,

I'm intrigued that you hear a difference here. I'd like to know how you
conducted this experiment. Would you elaborate?

Here's an interesting approach which is close to double-blind.

- Use an *off-board* DAC.
- Take your favourite track. Edit and shorten it to 20s or so to
  keep yourself sane.
- Make a wav version.
- Make a flac version.
- Make 10 copies of each, and put all in your library. (This makes
  20 tracks in total.)
- Turn on d_slimproto tracing in the slimserver.
- Get pen and paper.
- Have the slimserver serve up a random serving of these 20 tracks.
- Let's call the first track served "A". Listen to each subsequent
track and compare to either the first track or the previous track.
Try to discern whether you're listening to one version or another.
- When done, look at the slimserver log to see the order of play.
- Compare to your list. Did you get substantially more than 50%
right? Are you doing better than chance?

If your result is better than random, then it suggests that there is a
difference in the digital audio stream between the flac source and the
wav source. If so, then the additional experiment is to have the
slimserver perform the flac->wav decode instead of the SB3, and repeat.
This will help isolate if there is a problem with flac decoding in the
SB3 firmware/hardware.

If your result is no better than random, try repeating using -on-board-
DAC. A statistically significant result here would indicate an issue
with the internal DAC decode path.
