Gadzooks!  That would fry many systems!

I remember trying a CD player with a remote volume control for the
first time, direct into a *huge* (>1ft cubed) Musical Fidelity 185W amp
and *enormous* (5ft high, 96dB/W) Tannoy horns.  It started playing at
0dB, basically blowing us all off our chairs - it was some time before
we recovered our hearing!
