I only really tried the 'direct' variants once, but they left a poor
impression. However your explanation seems so reasonable I tried them
again.....

The effect on the impulse is what I expected from your description. The
pink trace (Impulse_Response_Filtered) tracks the blue
(Impulse_Response_Measured) for the first 2ms, then loses any high
frequency components. Their frequency responses (also pink/blue, here
with 1/3 octave smoothing) are pretty similar, so I guess REW must be
plotting this frequency response based on those first few milliseconds.
However the filter generated by drc is definitely not right. Green is my
normal filter, and gold the _direct equivalent! 

This is with drc's 'soft' configuration. I will try some other
combinations tomorrow.
