Yes "direct" filters uses "flat" target. (Which is a leftover from my first rounds of experimenting, and I'll switch it off). (I should say again. The "_direct" filters are experimental. You might not like them. If you do, that's good.)
Pre-echos: yes, but really in DRC they're treated as artifacts to be avoided (because they're very noticeably ugly on transients). That's why the way I described, of literally inverting the time-delayed impulse effects, isn't used by anyone; it sounds bad. Generally there will be a small amount of "non-causal" effect in filter impulse - before-time-zero, as it were - but it's very carefully shaped so you can't hear it. For tuning the DRC files, of course there are a zillion options (http://drc-fir.sourceforge.net/doc/drc.html), and most of them need a PhD. Start listening to the "soft" or "ERB" samples for minimum effect on high frequencies. Look at the differences between those and "normal". Or, ask in the drc-fir-users mailing list where Denis hangs out. PLMaxGain limits the amount of peak-limiting applied by DRC. That can be useful. But it's not "gain" in a global sense. The InguzDSP "gain" value in config is *relative* to InguzDSP's own calculation of the "loudness" of the filter you chose. This is done to let InguzDSP work out-of-the-box with filters of all sorts regardless how they have been normalized (and, trust me, different filters come out in all shapes and sizes). The goal here is actually that whatever you set for the "overall gain" of the filter by adjusting DRC parameters (etc) will have *no* effect because InguzDSP will re-adjust. The only reason you want to adjust the InguzDSP global gain is to get the right tradeoff between volume and clipping. The out-of-the-box value of -16 will still clip massively on Gnarls Barkley, say, because that stuff's clipped hard before they shovel it onto the CD. But classical music or jazz usually doesn't have that problem. If you hit digital clipping just once every five minutes you probably won't notice it at all. Or you can turn the gain down. Sorry, without applying compression in the DSP (which I don't plan to), there's just no way I'm aware of to do anything better here; if the original tracks have no headroom, then you need to turn the gain down. Or buy a power amp with more gain. There are two alternatives to DRC that I'm aware of: 'Acourate' (http://www.acourate.com/) and 'AudioLense' (http://www.juicehifi.com/index.html).
