Probably because parametric equalizers, like all equalizers, really
screw up phase.

It is possible for a IFR filter to maintain phase, but its not easy. Any
coil/resistor/cap EQ will totally trash phase. If you get a really
expensive one, such as a Neve or Great River, they still screw up phase,
not as much as cheap ones, but they cost a grand a channel.

Many audiophiles believe that proper phase is critical to realism. This
is something that Quads and Maggies deliver, and to my ears, they sure
sound great.
