There are various standalone boxes that can do this - I've had 3
different TacT models, deqx has some, and of course Behringer.  

They are all separate boxes, so something to buy, more cables, and
something else in the rack.  Also, even "audiophile" devices like the
TacT process the signal from its native frequency, and are not
transparent to the source.  I've even used outstanding DACs which
operate at TacT's native frequency and ultimately decided all the
processing isn't worth it.

The beauty of doing it in Slimserver is that the signal can be
manipulated through its native form, before ever leaving the computer. 
There is no apparent distortion nor loss of resolution and the rest of
the system can remain unchanged.  It's a true example of all the
benefits without the downsides.
