I bet its because it is trivial to do, connect a signal generator to the input, put a 'scope on the output, take photo. Fills up magazine with nice pictures, which the art director insists on. There are only so many minimonitors and 17" wide boxes with one or two knobs that you can show in a magazine, which is a visual media. Part of the reason he uses it is that as I put in the initial posting, folks have been doing it a long time. And its a nice easy to see visual. There is some correlation, and in general cheap amps look worse than good amps.
