Thinking about how others in this thread have identified the ripping and
delivery (PC to SB+) processes as the significant obstacles to digitised
music reaching the mass market, is it not fair to conclude that
on-demand services, rather than CD purchase and rip, is the way
forward? 

For a start it is neater (requiring fewer user interventions), sound
quality and tag accuracy can be regulated by the provider, and the user
won’t need to worry about backup. The whole process will be facilitated
by ever-speedier and more stable internet connections, which are
already becoming standard via our telecoms providers for TV. 

Surely it’s a case of when we stop using physical media rather than
if…?
