You don't need a "real network" just a laptop, SqueezeBox and either a cross over cable or a small hub. just test it at home. You'll probably have to setup static IP addresses for the ethernet connection to your laptop, and tell the SB to use a static IP as well. Could be, but unless something is wrong (like the old one is grossly underpowered, or flat out failing) I would expect the difference to be subtle.
