You don't need a "real network" just a laptop, SqueezeBox and either a 
cross over cable or a small hub.

just test it at home.

You'll probably have to setup static IP addresses for the ethernet 
connection to your laptop, and tell the SB to use a static IP as well.
Something like 172.16.1.5 for the laptop and 172.16.1.10 for the SB will 
work fine.

I'd be amazed if a $1000 integrated amp is night and day better. Could 
be, but unless something is wrong (like the old one is grossly 
underpowered, or flat out failing) I would expect the difference to be 
subtle.

Of course, that's what tests and listening are for.
