Thanks for the suggestion on using the SB without a network, I'll have to try that out.

Well, it's mainly the belief that my existing receiver ($600 NAD L53 50wpc DVD-combo receiver) doesn't have a great analog path (no direct mode and I'm sure providing a decent analog path probably wasn't high on the design priority for this unit). CDs played in the unit's DVD player sound noticably better than the SB playing the same songs via the coax or analog connection.
