What about Finns? I quite like the Järvi recordings I've got of Tchaikovsky, Taneyev, Prokofiev & Shostakovich, though I'm not always sure why: the recordings with the Scottish National Orchestra occasionally suffer from rocky intonation and loose ensemble. Still, as an example, the presto from the Shostakovich 6 with Järvi and the SNO: messy, but still more exciting for me than the other recordings I've got: Barshai & WDR, Haitink & Concertgebouw. Also: Ashkenazy: I just heard that same complaint from a young Greek pianist named Ioannis Potamousis, who's doing the circuit playing Rach #3 right now...he said that Ashkenazy was "boring." And yet, of all the recordings of the Skryabin sonatas that I've got (John Ogdon, Ashkenazy, Håkon Austbø, Marta Deyanova, Ronald Smith, Jenny Lin) Ashkenazy's are the only recordings of the last 3 sonatas that I can stand to listen to at the moment. But I'll take your advice and try to pick up some more recordings by Kondrashin, Svetlanov and Rozhdestvensky.
