Alex is claiming his modded unit "walks all over" the stock unit , a claim that has to be proved. He is also saying that the stock unit "needs" this and that. By implication he is saying that the stock unit is inadequate and further by implication he is saying the designer of the stock unit did not optimize it.
Most mods involving tubes change the sonics , change does not = better for ALL , this is a prefrence based thing and not categorical improvement (I use a Jolida and a musical fidelity HP amp as well as a custome SE hp amp , all valve based , I like valve sound with my senheissers) I do not see the benefits of actually modifying this unit. If you want a valve DAC , use one and then put a SB3 on it , if you want a better "digital" front end , modify a SB3. Sean , despite claims that digital attenuation is inaudible , the mod that I would like to see on your unit and that would perhaps satisfy a lot of Audiophiles is the addition of a high quality analog volume control. Furthermore the ability of using the Transporters digital output to feed its own DAC would be desireable to those wishing to use other DSP processors in line (like a TACT etc) At any rate , Sean , you should feel complimented in that your unit is so highly regarded that the modders have seen fit to give it their attention. By defending or getting a little prickly about their claims of your implied incompetence in topology , or asking for DBT's will inflame those on the lunatic fringe of this hobby. Arguing the point will never win over the hearts and minds of luddites or those convinced that modded units are always better.
