Irrespectie of the sound sthrough your current setup, I think you'd be
better off investing into a file format that is utterly non-lossy for
your favorite recordings if they are truly good recordings. I think for
most commercial music 256k MP3 is plenty and will be above the intended
reproduction quality.

I make the call based on (a) how much of a favorite it is to me and (b)
how blatantly commercial the recording is.

These days, I download most of the blatant commercial stuuf as 128k
files from Itunes. Opinions are divided on the best long term storage
strategy. I tend to burn thinga to a CD on ITunes and then rip it at
160k MP3 CBR. Only for very commercial stuff. My favorite music (last
CD purchase was Stanley Clarke's "the Toys of Men") I rip as FLAC.
