It takes quite a bit of energy to drive a cutting head. I recall Naim
using a pair of bridged NAP250's on theirs. This was probably overkill.
However for a direct cut disk you will need mics, a mixing console with
mic amps, EQ etc, outboard compressors and limiters plus all of the
lathe electronics. As Pat said, more or less everything you would
normally use except any intervening storage medium such as tape/hard
disk.

Also you are only going through the electronics once instead of twice.

However, the crucial improvement is not the signal path reduction, it's
to do with using cutting heads and driving equipment that have been
carefully rebuilt/tweaked for the purpose so that you can cut a more
"dynamic" groove.

You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it
ain't what you'd call minimal...SB3+Stontronics PSU - Altmann
JISCO/UPCI - TACT RCS 2.2X with Good Vibrations S/W - MF X-DAC
V3/X-PSU/X-10 buffer (Audiocomm full mods)- Linn 5103 - Linn Aktiv 5.1
system (6x LK140's, ESPEK/TRIKAN/KATAN/SEIZMIK 10.5), Townsend
Supertweeters, Kimber & Chord cables
