This might be a shock but I agree with you. Ok, maybe not completely! I
agree with your conclusion at least - that a lot of modern recordings
sound sterile.

Personally I like raw recordings that have ambience: shuffling
audiences, coughs, banging doors etc. To me that is part of the live
experience. Normally these types of recordings are done simply, a pair
of stereo mics near the front of the stage.

I don't like clinical multi-mic recordings with a mic for every
instrument, multiple takes etc.

Perhaps there are more "good because they're simple" recordings
available on LP, which might explain your impressions?

However, it is possible to get nice live sounding recordings on CD (I
have a few).
