Bill, I also have the identical issue as you with firmware 40 and Squeezecenter 7.01. I have my Oppo DVD player hooked up and connected via Coax. Sometimes it works, but if i touch the volume or switch to another input or anything on the Transporter, I just get pops and noises. I've filed a bug report with Sean.
I have yet to try directly from the Transporter firmware.
