My collection is encoded with FLAC lossless, although I use MP3 lossy
for "portable" applications.  IMHO, the fact that lossy encoders work
at all is a good indication that ones ears can be fooled; that they
work as well as they do shows how much they can be fooled.  That said,
the listening experience is not static.  As just about any recording
engineer will tell you, one's ablility to hear and resolve audio
changes due to any number of factors.  Not to mention the fact that,
over time, one's system will probably change as well as one's
competance as a critical listener, so what is acceptable may change
over time.  For this reason, I feel that one might be making a decision
they would later regret by using a lossy CODEC to encode their
collection.
