I'm by no means the "Harry Pearson is God" type of audiophile (doesn't
his oh so holy "Super Disc List" suck!!) and I do take everything
written in the high end audio rags with a giant grain of salt but
nonetheless that doesn't mean that there aren't some truths mixed up in
there with all the other over-the-top BS.

And double blind tests do reveal a few things, like which system sounds
better (or the same) in that testing environment. Besides I'm not
against DBT, I'm just against DBT being used as the ultimate and only
method of testing. DBT, subjective testing and the taking of
measurements all have their place. To put things in perspective let's
go back to the wine analogy. Give 1000 people chosen at random some
samples of $500, $100, $25 and $10 a bottle wine and I think one would
find, based on the results of these untrained wine tasters, that any
wine costing more than $10/bottle is a complete waste of money.

The same thing applies to audio. For what it's worth, the vast (as in
completely overwhelming) majority of people feel that low bit rate
compressed audio files (think iTunes) sound as good as CDs, so I think
(NOT) it's quite safe to convert all one's flac files to 128k mp3s
since so few people can hear any difference.
