The top recording studios mount their speakers in walls (but the size
and shape of the room will have been designed around them!). Mounting
speakers in walls is potentially the best way to do it if it is done
properly to the extent of changing the shape of the room and
acoustically treating all surfaces.

For non-treated rooms and modestly priced speakers the most accurate
sound is usually to be found by pulling the speakers away from surfaces
to reduce driving room modes and early reflections. Almost all home
hi-fi speakers are designed to be used like this and if you place them
in or next to a wall the bass will be too loud (treble beams and is
unaffected but bass is omnidirectional and so doubles) and uneven (more
strongly driven room modes).

The problem with home hi-fi speakers is that they are almost always
only designed to operate away from walls. Professional monitors on the
other hand, have amplifiers built in (tidy), have one amplifier per
driver (more accurate), are cheaper (sound-orientated, competitive,
mass-produced-in-China market), play cleaner at volume (small speakers
in large rooms) and have a set of switches on the back to match the
room location. Perhaps their only disadvantage is their looks which
vary from mildly ugly to extremely ugly. If you are able to flush mount
them with a grille cover to match the room they might be your best
option.

For example, Behringer B2030A are about $100 each including
biamplifiers:

and pretty much represents the entry level at a step up from computer
monitor sound. I am not particularly recommending this brand but more
suggesting this type of speaker might better address your needs if
sound quality is a strongly weighted parameter.
