There's very little to go on in your post, but it seems you have an integrated amp (because you make no mention of swapping a pre in and out, just changing volume).
If you can't bypass the preamp stage of an integrated, it's best just to use that for volume control instead of a source. The preamp is in the signal path anyway so, yes, a source volume control has nothing to bring to the party. The more interesting debate is 'source volume control without a preamp' vs 'preamp volume control'.
