In addition to enough computing power, to -really- make DRC work, I think you need multiple speakers fed from different filters.... As a few others have said, DRC can work quite well, at a single listening point, but often falls apart if you move too far away. This is because bass will have several resonant nodes (and anti-nodes) in the average room. I think that in order to really flatten things out, you need to make measurements at lots of places in your room, then strategically place several sub-woofers, fed with independently equalized audio streams. With multiple sound sources, you could really start to influence and correct the various room resonant points.
