In addition to enough computing power, to -really- make DRC work, I
think you need multiple speakers fed from different filters....

As a few others have said, DRC can work quite well, at a single
listening point, but often falls apart if you move too far away.  This
is because bass will have several resonant nodes (and anti-nodes) in
the average room.  I think that in order to really flatten things out,
you need to make measurements at lots of places in your room, then
strategically place several sub-woofers, fed with independently
equalized audio streams.  With multiple sound sources, you could really
start to influence and correct the various room resonant points.

Of course, convincing your love that you really need four sub-woofers,
two of which have to be in the middle of the room, might just be a
little tricky!
