Using the digital volume w/o a preamp will work but I would imagine that it's not the highest quality way to control the volume. I have gone down this route not with my Squeezebox but a DAC with volume control and then connected straight to the power amp. To give the most flexibility to change components, I bought an integrated amp. Another option if you can live w/o a remote is a passive type of amp like this http://www.sonocable.com/products_silence1.shtml Don't know anything about the quality though.
