I wouldnt do it. I've got two squeezeboxes and I've had on 3 occasions where I've turned them on and even with the volume all the way down, they have essentially blasted static. The only way to fix it was to unplug the power to the device and plug it back in.If I didnt have a preamp, I'm sure it would have fed the amp full signal worth of static and surely fried my speakers.
Having said that, I have a Threshold SA3 and I use an old Rotel preamp and its working great. I borrowed a friends Bryston preamp but i found it kind of harsh so I'm quite impressed with this Rotel.
