I agree - but you could build a high quality one with a couple of
high-ampage DPDT switches and all-soldered connections (or HQ
plugs/sockets).

A plastic box would suffice.

I don't believe that would compromise quality in the system described
above (or even higher grade ones...not everyone's using Nordost
cables!).
