It's an endless debate whether coaxial is better than optical, generally
it's down to implementation and beliefs (google google :-) ). I use
coax, because i believe its the right thing for my equipment.

rgrds Recievers, yes some actually have analog bypass. but people with
recievers tend to have 5.1 speaker systems with subwoofer, and
want/needs to use it for music to.
I have never seen any modern HT amp with analog subwoofer filters ? so
if sub is used everything is digitized.
And what about that automatic room correction some of these things
applies ?
I have been to many peoples homes and seen things, they seldom nows
what mode the amp is at the moment ;-)

So therefore I tend to agree with the general advice in the wiki "HT
reciver = digital input".

But if you now what you want and now how your stuff works, you can of
course use an analog bypass.
If you have large enough main speakers, you might not need your sub for
music.
And many sub implementations is ok for movies but not so good at music.
