Unless you're using ReplayGain, the advantages of FLAC v. ALAC really
come down to personal preference. Since you're using Slim Devices and
Apple products you choose which features are less painful to give up.

I wouldn't be ripping to 48KHz for reasons previously stated, but
iTunes or Max ( http://sbooth.org/Max/ ) should fine for ripping. There
are a lot of inaccurate into on web about iTunes (especially on OS X
which has AppleScript support).
