Applescripts ( http://dougscripts.com/itunes/index.php ) makes the
program far more useful than it is without in my opinion. 

BTW, not a perfect solution and I have no personal experience, but
several have discussed Fluke ( http://cubicfruit.com/fluke/ ) on
Head-Case for playing FLAC in iTunes.
