We are way OT.

In practice the performance was a wash. And 3COM was selling NICs for
$50, while IBM was charging $90 for the cable to connect a wallplate to
the NIC.

Economic won. Almost as good and 80% cheaper wins every time.

Just as the CD was not designed as a replacement for the LP. It was a
replacement for the cassette tape, and it did a great job at that
