I've heard many high-end audiophile-grade systems playing it, my father had a decent mid-fi setup I grew up listening to, etc. It's just not as good, period. I think people like it for the same reasons they like tubes - a kind of nostalgia mixed with Luddism, a recollection of the "good old days" of the past, warmly veiled and dimly remembered through a rose-tinted haze. They want a bit of that back, because they connect to it emotionally.
