This is a largely unhelpful comment, but I personally have not been let down by a Deutsche Grammophon recording (which I see Phil's is). And for what it's worth, Wikipedia (yes, I know, take it with a grain of salt) sometimes has a "selected recordings" section that can whittle the options down. Also, I've found this review site: http://www.classicstoday.com/search.asp to be pretty helpful.
