Thank you everyone. I should have been clearer that I'm after the whole of The Nutcracker, not just the Suite or excerpts.

I agree. The problem is this is very subjective! For example I have what is generally considered musically the best recording of Scheherazade (Fritz Reiner/Chicago Symphony Orchestra on RCA Victor) but I much prefer the performance on an obscure disc (Hymisher Greenburg/European Philharmonic Orchestra). The latter is more aggressive and melodramatic which I think suits Scheherazade. It's awesome! But I don't expect anyone else to agree. In reviewing the available versions of The Nutcracker I found some opinions on the below which are 180 degrees opposite to each other. Seems many classical performances are like Marmite (for those not in the UK - you love it or hate it). I'm going to go for http://www.sa-cd.net/showtitle/3268 (Dorati/LSO on Mercury Living Presence) because it is complete and I like the 1812 from Mercury (which I know is a very simple recording which gives me hope for this one). It's a hybrid SACD and I'm going to assume the CD layer is mastered as it should be. If anyone has any strong opinions about this version let me know. Otherwise I will report back when I buy it and listen to it!
