An effect of this is to eliminate the DC component. Although I ordered a transformer and put a footprint for it when I made the PCB layout, I never built one with the coax parts populated (I always used Toslink in my prototype boards), although the transformaer output circuit is directly from the Crustal Semiconductor datasheet, so I wouldn't expect it to fail horibly.
