My ReadyNAS Duo is NOT silent. It has a fan and that creates a steady background noise, with the speed changing every now and again. Also, the hard disk mountings have no sound reduction features so you are going to hear those. Perhaps I have a particularly noisy fan but I would not tolerate it next to my music system. Wireless is not built in to the ReadyNAS Duo. Not sure about the rest of the range. The software (I presume you mean the Squeezecenter server) runs on the NAS device - it has to if you think about it. And the ReadyNAS is s-l-o-w (very slow!) compared to any conventional PC/server for library updates. Selecting tracks and getting the music started is also a bit clunky in comparison to my low-end Dell server. It works fine once it gets going though with my FLAC-encoded library. The ReadyNAS does have the advantage of supporting Squeezecenter out of the box, with a simple, tick-in-the-box set-up. I also found it easy to upgrade. It is also very compact and light compared to the lump of a Dell server which I have also tried. If I was starting again I would be looking at something like Tranquil PC to support an Ubuntu server. It might cost a bit more (but not that much) and require far more set-up effort, but it should give a long-term solution that could sit next to the SB. -- dBerriff MF kW250S, SB3, Castle Stirling 3's ------------------------------------------------------------------------ dBerriff's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12247 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53344 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
