I agree with most you write, but your example would loose the "blind" part of it as you can see which version as the higher sample-rate. Also, for abx you would need three recordings of which two are the same... if I understand it all correctly. But again, I agree and one could be given 3 black boxes labeled A, B and X with only on/off switch and analog output and let you play with it for as long as you want.
