Let's be clear about what some of us are doing. As far as I'm aware, very few are running a TP or SB direct to power amps without incorporating any passive attenuation. In some cases it may be that the levels happen to be fine, but that's the exception to the rule. What most (myself included) have done is establish a maximum listening level and inserted passive attenuation such that with the TP/SB at 100% volume, we get that listening level. The digital volume control is then used for day-to-day adjustment. I for one have experienced no *audible* degradation in resolution or S/N ratio in this configuration. What happens if the TP/SB suddenly emits white noise at 100%? I don't know - none of my units (a TP, an SB2 and an SBR) have ever done that. If they did, I'm sure it wouldn't be pleasant, but since the level is restricted by the passive attenuation, no lasting damage would be done. Note that if you were using the TP/SB at 100% volume feeding a "normal" preamp, with the volume turned up to your maximum listening level, then exactly the same thing could happen. Sean's comment could be misinterpreted to mean that he advises against even using passive attenuation. I don't believe that's what he's saying. seanadams;363210 Wrote: > Transporter is NOT a preamp. Interesting - that's precisely how I use mine. I bought it specifically to use as a digital preamp. The fact that it sounded even better than I had hoped was icing on the cake. -- cliveb Transporter -> ATC SCM100A ------------------------------------------------------------------------ cliveb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=348 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55246 _______________________________________________ audiophiles mailing list [email protected] http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
